Abstract:
Despite their significant importance for the university educated class, most university campuses in Iran have been isolated from their surrounding neighborhood, and they act as a set of separated spaces. Fencing between the campuses and urban spaces is the physical manifestation of segregation between the academic community and the local community. The boundary reflects an expression of power and therefore there are those who benefit and those who suffer from it. It makes some people "included" and others "excluded".
The purpose of this research is to study how to strengthen the connection between Ferdowsi University campus and its surrounding neighborhood and the city in general, through redesigning its west edge as an urban space, which not only emphasizes its cultural and educational identity, but also contributes to transparency and provides a platform for integration and communication among academics and the local community.
The study area is Bahonar Boulevard which is located in the west edge of Ferdowsi University campus from Engineering school to the school of architecture and urban planning (inside the campus), and Bahonar neighborhood ( outside the campus). First, the history of the relationship between educational spaces and urban spaces in traditional Iranian cities has been studied. In this research, we studied relevant theoretical frameworks and several case studies in creating such multifunctional spaces and extracted qualitative criteria related to these spaces. Criteria derived from the theoretical framework has been prioritized based on Delphi’s method, with regard to academics’ and professional practitioners’ opinion. After studying and analyzing the study area based on the resulting criteria, and application of the theoretical framework, design strategies and policies have been presented and an urban design guideline for the area has been proposed.
