Abstract:
urban spaces are distinc from each other due to their meanings. By understanding the specific meanings of each space, appropriate behaviors occur. Religious spaces are one of the most meaningful spaces between urabn spaces especially in our country because of people cultures and beliefs. The spirituality of space and the sacred meanings of it, demand special customs and behavior by pilgrims. Today, because of too much attention to physical aspects and economic efficiency in religious spaces, desired concepts and meanings has not been associated in pilgrims minds and predispose behavior that are not in the dignity of spaces or has not change by being in space. Therefore, the necessity to create an appropriate place to convey expected meaning for religious spaces, in order to indicate proportionate behavior seems necessary.
In this study, to achieve this goal at first, the relationship between humans and the environment was explained and the impact of environment meanings on behavior specified. The result of this is that meanings can be classified in two categories: objective (exisiting in the environment) and subjective meanings (meaning formed in the mind). Whatever the meanings in the environment formed more meanings in the mind, the possibility of appropriate behaviors in space will be more. In order to extend this result in the religious space the meanings of religious spaces include "Cleanliness", "peace", "spirituality", "guidance", "humility" and “reminder”, and by investigating the pilgrimage customs as recommended acceptable behavior in religious spaces, appropriate norms have been derived. Therefore it can be said, improving environmental quality in the form of obtained norms cause the more formation of meaning in the minds of pilgrims, and this increases the possibility of pilgrimage behaviors.
