Since in the past, this space did not use as now and they also have different use cases, there are few experiences and ideas about how to achieve a high quality of these spaces. One of the underground spaces qualities that access to it has always been questioned, is legibility. Legibility or way finding is remember the environment in mind and remind people to re-routing and navigation in these spaces. Providing legibility in underground space is different from ground level and it needs studies about factors that affecting the way finding of underground spaces and strategies to achieve the desired level of this quality.
In this study, after reviewing the literature on underground spaces and legibility for all spaces in general and in particular for underground spaces, the Factors that affecting the quality of underground spaces were detected. Then by extracting measurable indicators of these factors, a basis for assessing the quality of legibility in underground spaces has been provide. Underground of intersection of Vali-Asr, Tehran is one of the few examples of current subsurface space in Tehran and the use of underground spaces in the future. Based on studies in the field of quality of legibility, this space has not ideal conditions and for this reason, it has been chosen as case study for evaluate based on indicators derived from the theoretical foundations. This study is an applied research that evaluate indicators with qualitative approach and using tools such as documentary research, field survey and analysis software. Based on the results of the evaluation and taking into account the world experience, goals, strategies and policies have been developed and proposed design has been presented.
