A nano-micro hierarchical ZnO superhydrophobic surface has been fabricated on an iron sheet via CBD method. ZnO deposition from various Zn sources including zinc nitrate, zinc acetate, zinc chloride and basic (precipitating) agents include ammonia, urea and sodium hydroxide were evaluated. Taguchi L_27 experimental design was used to study and optimize the effective factors such as type of the zinc salt, type of basic agent , reaction time, chemical modification time, type of additive, concentration of additive, temperature of reaction, the ratio of ethanol to water in the solvent and the molar ratio of zinc nitrate to the base. Morphology features, phase analysis, chemical composition, topography and static water contact angle (WCA) were evaluated by means of FESEM, XRD, FTIR and AFM. Results showed that the chemical modification time and type of the zinc salt respectively, are the most effective factors to achieve superhydrophobic property. Effect of additives like CTAB, HMTA and Triton X 100 on morphology and structure surface were studied. Finally, a superhydrophobic ZnO thin film with WCA of 165.1 ± 0.41˚ and contact angle hysteresis of about 1.42˚ was obtained.
