Use of Light weight materials, as a method of soil improvement in many projects (in different applications) is used so far to reduce the amount of loads. Acceptability and efficiency of this method draws many attentions of experts in order to identify and introducing new different materials. There has been growing interest in the use of non-conventional as lightweight geo-materials, and their introduction has presented both opportunities and challenges to researchers and engineers worldwide.
Expanded PolyStyrene (EPS) is a super lightweight material which used commonly in food packing industry and construction. Hence adding EPS beads into soils is a new mixture of soil light weighting.
In this study with blending 5, 10, 20 and 30 volume percent’s of EPS beads with 161 Firouzkooh sand, samples with medium density’s has been createdand by means of consolidated drained triaxial test (CD) in 5 different cell pressures (50, 100, 200, 300 and 400) the combination’s (Soil + EPS) mechanical properties has been tested.
Results shown that even though adding EPS beads into Firouzkooh sand causing an increase in soil’s cohesion but also because of deduction in friction angle it makes combination’s shear strength lesser eventually.
In order to elimination this shortcoming, some direct shear tests in three different normal pressures with strengthening the shear plain with steel grids has been performed which its results shown an increase in combination’s (soil + EPS + Steel grids) shear strength. Also some other direct shear tests performed on pure EPS beads samples itself for finding the cause of samples cohesion.
