The truth about Iran’s megacities is lack of visual quality. Because of technological requirements of present age, rapid changes in the physical development of large cities is inevitable, and townscape and key views, which are the historical memory of place and the most important part of the environmental qualities, targeted more than any other factors. Shiraz, the largest city of south country and place of the most beautiful buildings and historic gardens, has been exposed to these fundamental developments. Developments that have bitter experience of damage to Historic Zandie Complex and recently Eram Garden. In Iran, despite severe weakness and sometimes lack of the standard for visual guidance as an instrument of urban policy, mostly townscape design looked as a marginal and decorative strategy. In the other hand effect of other contexts, like density sales expresses turbulence that appears every day in the broader.
Therefore, in this study, we have tried to change the focus from marginal and decorative approach of townscape to general and sustainable approach to investigate and resolve this issue in the example of Shiraz. The main objective of this research is finding a way to guide the development and creation of contemporary townscapes, with emphasis on protecting key views of public place from the view of the pedestrian. To do so after theoretical studies in literature reviews and international experience, mining appropriate norms, measures and qualitative and quantitative methods, analyses field samples in the north district of Shiraz city. The main difference between this research and previous researches in Iranian samples is that it doesn’t limit to qualitative methods and using detailed quantitative visual analysis methods and techniques simulated the virtual environments, such as visual protection surface (VPS) and Accurate Visual Representations (AVR).
The results of this study show that identification and detailed design key views of public places is an excellent tool to improve the quality of the urban environment as well as guidance for future development in accordance with the city's historical and cultural values. In addition to four para norms of context orientation, role motivation, eye-catch, and a variation play an important role in analysis and decisions for key views. Finally, due to the importance and potential of Shiraz city, proposed of urban design framework with an emphasis on visual management, as an urban document, in order to complete detailed plans or comprehensive document improve the quality of urban landscape could be the perfect solution for giving effect the goals and vision of the city. Because townscape and views whit improve the quality of the visual environment and create the potential for attracting tourists, can act as economic benefits.
