Knowing the role of structure in architecture perception has been considered as a necessary issue for ages. Three fundamental architecture components have been named by Vitruvius as “sustainability”, “Product” and “Hilarity”. “Hilarity” is a word for expressing the effects of building on aesthetic sense of individuals who are associated with. The main goal of architectural design is creating forms which meet the building’s practical requirements and also are successful from aesthetical aspect.
Creating functional designs by which the needs of project are met and also it is complementary to architectural aesthetic sense are the duty of structural engineers.
The Industrial Revolution and its consequences as an enormous event along with other factors led to the breaking of the link between architect and structural engineering. Due to its negative outcomes, need to study in this area turned into a necessity.
The purpose of this study is confirming or rejecting aesthetics standpoints which are used vastly in order to improve the visual features of structure’s form and structural behavior, while the architectural and structural consistency increases and human perception of the environment improves.
This study is trying to understand and investigate the principles which define beauty in architectural and structural works by a descriptive, analytical and qualitative approach.
The effective components in determining the beauty of the structure, according to this study’s findings which were obtained from analyzing the thinkers’ view and their coding are “Internal” (factors resulted from the structure itself) and “External” (factors which depends on environment, individual’s perception and social and cultural contexts) factors. Structure’s internal factors include for parts of form, structural, mystical and nature. The form principles are recognized as the most effective factor, in explaining the structure’s beauty, with the highest frequency among other factors. The form principles include two areas of skeletal (proportionality, balance, discipline, unity in diversity, scale) and intrinsic (form which represents the static behavior, practicality).
