Abstract
Religious tourism is one of the most popular forms of tourism, including tourism, in the present time. The review of studies in this area shows that religious tourism has many consequences. For this purpose, in this thesis, using the meta-analysis method and emphasizing functionalism, the study of religious tourism and its positive and negative functions in the Iranian society were discussed. With the theory of attention to the effects of religious tourism, it can be divided into four economic, political, social and cultural divisions. The results of the research indicate that, in the subsistence system, religious tourism improves the basic infrastructure in the region, creates employment, increases incomes and improves the economic performance of tourism cities. Religious tourists are cultural tourists traveling to places of pilgrimage, religious monuments, religious practices, religious education and spending leisure time in religious places and centers of the world. This research studies the role of religion in the development of religious tourism. The research type is applied and its method is descriptive-analytic.
