In this study novel magnetic demulsification of synthetic water in Oil (W/O) emulsion was discussed. For this application, Cetyl Tri methyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB) coated nano magnetite have been successfully synthesized using the chemical coprecipitation method. Owning to hydrophiphilic properties of CTAB, fine water droplets tagged to the nano particles and the vial settled on the hand magnet. Super-paramagnetic properties of nano particles, allowed for convenient isolation by magnetic field. The morphology, structure, particle size and magnetic properties of nano particle have been characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Energy-Dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) picture. XRD analysis indicates that the nano particles did not have any impurity. Formation of CTAB coating on nano particle surfaces was proofed by FTIR test. Most of the magnetic nano particles have an average diameter of 32.7 nm, and the saturation magnetization value of coated nano particles were found to be 58.2 emu/gr .The water content of emulsion has been measured by Karl Fischer titrator. The 99.3% reduction of water content was achieved with 0.1 g nano particles in 20 ml emulsion and after 3 times recycling, the efficiency remained constant. In order to announce the optimum amount of nano particles in 20 ml emulsion, i.e. 0.1 g, experiments were carried out for different masses of nano particles, including 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, 0.1 and 0.2 g. This indicates that CTAB-coated Fe3O4 nano particles should perform well in the demulsification of gas oil.
