Walking is the most natural, the most essential, and the earliest form of getting around for people; in addition, it is still the most important possibility for visiting places and activities; feeling the passion and the mobility of life; and discovering the values and attractions in the environment. Unfortunately, due to the dominance of automobiles over human beings as well as over the civil environment, pedestrian street and old city centers were neglected and unloved. This neglect has resulted in unfavorable consequences including environment pollution, difficulty and slowness of movement, the reduction in leisure facilities, the conversion of open spaces into vehicle lane, and the destruction of historical sites and ancient monuments to widen the streets and creating parking areas.
In the present study, Hessar Street located in arak city has been selected as the sample for a pedestrian street. This street is of great potential to be converted into a decent pedestrian street due to its position in the historical context of Arak and adjacency to Arak market, density of pedestrians, heavy traffic, density of commercial and administrative activities, and the existence of genuine historical walls dating back to Qajar dynasty.
The present study is of descriptive, analytic, and practical type; the research method is case study. In the beginning, the literature and other studies conducted in Iran and other parts of the world were reviewed, using documentary, library, and field study. Thus the theoretical framework of the study was formed and derived through five criteria ‒ accessibility, security, attractiveness, convenience, and readability. Then, using the national documents, the scope of the study was defined.
