Addressing the systems theory and studying cities from this perspective can lead to understanding cities as systems that have many Effective and influential factors; this issue is increasingly making cities’ nature more complex than ever. Meanwhile by understanding and using integration concepts in economic, social, environmental and physical dimensions this complexity could be understood to some extend and on the other hand, by leading cities to not only focus on physical growth and quantitative factors but also toward achieving sustainable development and Simultaneously addressing qualitative and quantitative factors, can to some extend prevent the reduction of integration and probable economical, socio-cultural, physical and environmental segregation. Damavand city, in spite of having a valuable historical background seems to be facing issues like reduction of social interactions, discrepancy between residents of different neighborhoods, demolition of gardens and etc.; these problems are a result of physical growth in the new areas, migration to the city and the implementation of later construction projects like the so called social housing and etc. the necessity of addressing these issues in the context of urban integration is the reason to choose this city as the case study that in the end resulted in developing the main question of the essay, what is the relation between urban integration and urban sustainable development? this question identified the goals of the research in the context of understanding the mutual relationship between the concepts of integration and urban sustainable development to present solutions and suggestions to create or increase the good impacts of these concepts in Damavand city.
This study has been conducted in six chapters. After explaining the research framework in the first chapter, in the next chapter the theatrical framework and the best practices were examined, then in the third chapter which focuses on the indexation and refinement of the research methodology, according to the contents of the second chapter, the indices needed for sustainable urban development and urban integration were extracted and analyzed. By comparing the indices of these two concepts it became clear that half of their indices are very similar and even the same. In the fourth chapter the existing condition of Damavand city based on its different neighborhoods and according to the indices extracted from the third chapter was synthesized in the social, economic, physical and environmental dimensions and in the next chapter were analyzed by using questioner, place-check and space syntax technics. In the end the integration of the city, divided into different neighborhoods, was examined and analyzed by numeral taxonomy technic and these neighborhoods were categorized into homogeneous areas based on Marshal rule to identify the degree of urban segregation of city’s neighborhoods. The last chapter (chapter six) was written to identify the answers to the research questions, examining the goals, Proving the hypothesis, research obstacles, results and conclusions and the suggestions for future studies. The general method of the thesis is descriptive, explanatory and adaptive and the studies were carried out using documents, library, and surveying.
In the process of developing this research in spite of having many problems like snowing while surveying in the Damavand city, the lack of cooperation of the residents in answering some questions, the huge amount of statistical society and the need to examine different neighborhoods separately, the amount of time needed to conduct these studies and the fact that the subject of this study is quite new, the study was taken place according to the principal framework. The results show the lack of integration in Damavand city and the existing of segregation between city’s neighborhoods specially from social integration perspective which in the end leads to the increasing number of gardens and agricultural lands demolition and of course not reaching to the goals of urban sustainable development. Also by proving the hypothesis test it was concluded that not only integration and urban sustainable development do have a meaningful relation but also that addressing urban integration is a need to realize urban sustainable development.
