Taking into account the need for clean urban transport and its sustainability, in this project the emphasis is on designing a vehicle that produces zero emissions, thus an electric motor is chosen for propulsion. The the vehicle in question is a three wheeler having one driven wheel at the back and two at the front, the reasons for this choice are as follows;
As a vehicle it is classed as a motorcycle in many countries including Iran, therefore the annual road tax and other governmental taxes are very low compared to four wheel vehicles.
Compared to four wheel vehicles there are much simpler and less number of standards of manufacture and safety test are required.
As a three wheeler compared to a four wheeler a differential, tyre, wheel, brake and hub is eliminated resulting in weight savings of about 25% which helps extend the range of travel per charge, plus a saving on manufacturing costs.
Taking into account the importance of sustainability of this project the following five subjects have become of prime importance in defining this project, Mini vehicle, Electric propulsion, three wheeler, ergonomics and prototype build.
Due to non availability of similar type of vehicles in Iran for bench marking, samples of such vehicles have been considered in other countries with regards to their manufacture and urban use, also some expertise from local seasoned engineers with overseas background have been obtained.
During the design stage prior to prototype build a wooden pattern ( mock up ) was first constructed in order to check and comply with ergonomic standards while for power train a three phase AC water cooled electric motor constructed in aluminium was imported from England.
The standards for design and manufacture were obtained from The Institute Of Standards And Industrial Research Of Iran under the classification, Three Wheeler Vehicles.
It must be noted that the essence of this project is Green Vehicle, meaning that in choosing materials for the construction of this vehicle recyclability has been of prime importance. For this reason aluminium was chosen for the entire body and chassis plus many other components since aluminium is at least 90% recyclable with very little energy compared to other metals used in vehicle construction, also the use of non recyclable materials such as thermo-setting composites (glassfibre or carbonfibre) have been avoided.
