Pregnant women are not considered to be patients, rather they are mothers (or future mothers) who are (usually) in touch with maternity services for a short and compressive period of time. Pregnant women are considered to be “patients” in Iran and are placed into a treatment-centered environment from the beginning. The experience of a treatment-centered environment is a bitter one for them and leads to their decrease of satisfaction and, as a result, their inclination toward caesarean. Pregnancy is not a “normal disease”; it is a “normal physical process”. One of the methods for spreading this standpoint is by changing the concept of treatment-centered birth centers throughout the country. Nowadays, Architecture is moving toward user-centered approaches. Obviously, this approach is more significant in hospitals and health environments. In this regard, designing a birth center along with an awareness of mother’s needs, as the main users of the environment, will have a great impact on their satisfaction. On the other hand, following the “Natural Childbirth Promotion Program” issued by Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education, decreasing the large amount of caesarean in Iran needs some provisions. One of the main aspects of these provisions is the optimization and reinforcement of physical structure of the birth centers throughout the country.
The present research is done fundamentally and supplementary in order to extract the main effective factors on mother’s satisfaction. In the first part, after a review of library resources and interviews with 10 mothers, the effective factors on mother’s satisfaction are extracted. The results reveals that there exists no codified index for design criterias or their periodization. In the supplementary step, 110 questioners were completed randomly (in Tehran Akbar-Abadi Hospital, Tehran Ali-Asghar Hospital, and Governmental Hospital of Amol), and the resulted data were analyzed in SPSS software.
Based on the analysis of periodization of different factors, the respondents emphasized on the presence of their spouses during the childbirth. Preserving privacy was their last priority. In another part of the research, every micro factor of different components of the questionnaire are ranked (e.g. home-like).
