“The Emergency Department” is known as the heart of a hospital which is open 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.
The “ED” is welcomed to different catagories of patients with various needs. These criteria make the simulation and optimization of “ED” complicated and necessary.
In this thesis the current situation of a “ED” is simulated to find the average waiting time of the patient`s catagories, and finding the optimum numbers of staff through “Agent-Based” method with Arena. The current situation was optimized by Opt-Quest as well , to find the best numbers of staff while some limitations was included to the system (like budget and tha ma number of the staff).
In the second part of the thesis, for having a better layout of different parts of the ED and also having the easier paient and staff flow, after a long negotiation with some professional architects and the manager of the hospital and the staff who is deeply involved in this subject, two different layouts was designed which were optimized by Opt-Quest for finding the best solutions.
By reviewing the result, it is clear that the waiting time in the current situation was decreased 0.052% and 8.2% and 4,72% in the two other layouts.
In all scenarios the best numbers of staff was calculated. At the end scenario number 3 was picked as the best scenario.
We hope other hospitals be better for their patients by using these simp;e methods.
