In recent years, due to the financial considerations of projects, engineers are trying to optimize structures with different methods. Because construction materials of a structure is one of the most important factors of projects costs, reducing the weight of structural systems is of great importance. It is clear that mathematical methods, in spite of being very precise, are time-consuming. To solve this problem, metaheuristic algorithms which incorporate precision with high speed of computation are used instead of conventional methods. Combination of mechanisms, which uses the upper bound theory, is one of the most usable methods in rigid plastic analysis. In this method we look for a mechanism that results in the minimum collapse load factor. Metaheuristic algorithms are very efficient in seeking this minimum load factor.
In this thesis, Vibrating Particles System optimization algorithm is used for optimizing collapse load factor for planar frames.
