In this research, nano zirconium oxide (ZrO2) with two different morphologies was synthesized
by two methods of sol-gel and hydrothermal. Zirconium metal, due to its high strength and
stability, has been the reason for its use as a project's goal. Our goal in this research is to add
nanoparticles to PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate), which is a major component of acrylic
bone cement and the formation of nanocomposite to improve its mechanical properties. For
this purpose, ZrO2 with nano dimensions and two types of morphology were added to compare
their mechanical properties with PMMA. Also, in order to be close to the normal bone
structure, the hydroxyapatite extracted from the cattle bone in the nano dimension was added
as a third component to the desired composite. Mechanical properties have been investigated
using nano indentation and scratch experiments. The result of this improvement was the
mechanical properties of PMMA cement nanocomposite, which is the best result due to
different weight percentages of ZrO2 synthesized by sol gel and hydrothermal method,
respectively, of 3 and 5 wt% respectively.
XRD, SEM and AFM have been used to identify synthesized compounds.
