Reducing maintenance costs, increasing safety of track and comfort index are so important for railway engineers. Removing rail gaps in joints by welding rails, is a solution to achieve this important parameters.
Small radius curves and temperature changes cause lateral force in track. To dominate the lateral forces, it is necessary to increase lateral resistance of track. There are different methods to increase lateral resistance of railway track. These methods are classified in material changes, changes in size, geometry and dimensions of track components, and especially sleepers.
Utilizing mid-winged sleepers with changing the geometry and dimention of the sleepers is considered in this project. Berore this, wing sleepers was studied and investigated. Wing sleepers increase considerably the lateral resistance of track but there was some executive problemes in maintenance like collision between wings of sleepers and tamping machine tines.There fore this kind of sleepers (mid-winged sleepers) was made with a wing in the center of sleeper.
By measuring the lateral resistance force a conventional track and mid-winged track, lateral resistance increased considerably. The mid-winged panels test, single mid-winged sleeper test and numerical modeling with Abaquse increase 58% to 64% in the lateral resistance force.
