Building Information Modeling is known as a revolution in the industry, which has changed the process and design of buildings. Between the design stages, the design of the concept is also influenced by the acceptance of the BIM. Although BIM has brought many benefits, designers are still trying to make BIM in the early stages of the design process. Because using this technology at this stage, the possibility of optimizing the building in all areas is achieved with more achievement. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine how the BIM affects the concept design process and find answers to overcome the barriers to using BIM at this stage of design.
At first, within literature review, the design process changes are described in the BIM method, as well as the general features of the conceptual design phase to examine its evolution through the modeling of information. In addition, by examining strategies and research techniques, hybrid methods have been selected for study. Hence, by studying a case study in 2 projects as well as 3 interviews with BIM specialists as a data collection method, the real benefits of BIM at the conceptual level are the potential benefits and limitations that BIM platforms have created for the design of the concept and Of course, the challenges that designers encounter when adopting the BIM for the production of the concept are discussed. The interview findings also indicate the necessary reforms in this regard.
The research concludes that BIM has contributed to the design concept, and, based on this technology, the concept has become more integrated with all involved in the project. However, there are still challenges to achieve a quick result in assessing design options and choosing the best solution through integrated simulations. For this reason, this technology needs to be improved in both software and hardware fields to support the design thinking process at the conceptual stage. In this research, by discussing the results, some important issues have emerged as recommendations for potential solutions to improve the application of BIM at the conceptual stage.
Finally, with the explanation of the hospital as a building with a unique function, both in terms of architectural and constructional functions, the BIM's usage guidelines for its design have been examined.
