Self-sufficiency is the concept of creating a logical relationship between supply and demand, which ultimately leads to sustainable development. The concept of self-sustaining habitat refers to a society that supplies its needs from own resources as much as possible. Traditional communities such as villages can be considered as complete examples of self-sufficient habitats. But the current expansion of villages and changing lifestyles of the people due to the impact of cities on rural areas, have increased the consumption and uncontrolled perception from the environment and, eventually, the gradual death of these habitats. The purpose of this research is to extract and characterize the characteristics of a self-sufficient and sustainable society from the world literature and traditional ones along with pathology and provide solutions for resuscitating self-sustaining habitats in today's condition. About the research method, for self-sufficiency and its related concepts, library sources are used along with the selection of rural sample communities and the extraction of self-sufficiency indicators by field research. By reviewing the history of research in global literature and studying the sample, three indicators of self-sufficiency in providing food products, self-sufficiency in energy and self-sufficiency in commodity and trade are the three main factors for moving toward self-reliance. These three factors have been compared and rooted in both modern and traditional societies. By comparing these two systems, it has been concluded that in the current societies, the discussion of self-sufficiency and movement towards it is prescriptive and is the result of regional adoptive policies for the goals of independent, while self-sufficiency in the traditional societies originated from self-sufficient culture that can be transmitted from generation to generation. In the meantime, in order to maintain self-sufficient in societies, three factors are necessary that are to educate self-sufficiency, participation and co-operation and the culture of consumption. Finally, by discussing self-sufficiency indicators, some strategies are proposed as the path to resuscitating self-sufficiency in the traditional societies.
