Gridshell structures are among the shell structures which, in comparison, with other structures, have not only a certain form, but also a subtle form, therefore, they are ideal for the formation of collective uses. An elastic gridshell is a freeform structure, generally doubly curved, but formed out through the reversible deformation of a regular and initially flat structural grid.
The invention of the elastic gridshell concept is commonly attributed to Frei Otto, a german architect who devoted several years to gridshells. As mentioned above Start point of developing Gridshells happened in Germany and It is only 20 years later that gridshells started to reappear, in the late 90’s mainly in the United Kingdom, and for projects that had interest in environmental problematics. this study has been progressing thorough these years and today researches are focusing on different material aspect and use of composite polymers in this issue.
Although Gridshell has lots of advantages, this type of structure is still not widely used in the construction industry. One of the main reasons might be the final covering of these structures. Hence, this study intends to propose a suitable method for optimizing the process of covering gridshell structures. To fulfill this aim, first, we were going to consider geometric methods and materials selection which were used to cover these projects and those which were defined economically appropriate. This optimization was accomplished by integrating the Grid Charge modules and creating larger panels for the final covering, and the integration process of modules was written as a parametric algorithm. This algorithm is applicable to the design of other types of Gridshell structures and, also, increasing the speed of 3D modeling, plays an important role in reducing the design and implementation costs of these types of structures. In the final stage, designing construction details of the proposed method are discussed.
This algorithm has been organized in a way that the resulted panels are triangular and therefore Joint details should be designed specifically for these structures.
