One of the significant traffic flow characteristics that needs to be expanded studies is the dependence of the flow of traffic on the characteristics of the vehicles, the route characteristics, behavior and habits of drivers, and their interaction with each other. Different driver’s behaviors makes it possible for traffic characteristics to vary, even in a specific traffic flow with the same road profile and vehicles characteristic. These factors indicate that the traffic flow must be investigated continuously in important roads in order to determine the characteristics of the traffic flow, that can vary in different conditions, and can be used to better management and planning of traffic. Finding the relationships between traffic parameters provides a appropriate information about traffic flow, which can greatly predict the behavior of traffic flow.
From the past untill now, there have been many models for traffic parameters provided by various researchers, which indicate the traffic flow characteristics. Although all of these models have been scientifically valid, since each of them is specified in accordance with a special and unique condition, they can not be used to predict the traffic flow in other locations. So, because of need of developing countries to control and improve transportation, the necessity for these studies in these countries, including Iran, is clear. It is necessary to conduct separate studies for freeways, highways and other road facilities, and analyze them in order to determine and predict traffic behavior accurately.
The Tehran-Qom Freeway as one of the most standard freeways in Iran, can describe the functional characteristics of this type of facility in Iran. In this dissertation, by examining the data of this freeway on both direction, in four different seasons of 1396, attempts have been made to evaluate the effect of time on traffic flow behavior. Also, by fitting existing data with speed-density models (as one of the most important traffic models) that presented to date, the best model has been selected for each month of the year to predict the capacity of this freeway. It is observed that the traffic behavior of this freeway, in most cases, is very different from the models proposed by previous researchers, which shows the different behavior and habits of drivers in Iran.
