Multi-phase electric drives offer great number of advantages compared to three-phase drive such as high reliability, fault tolerant improvement, efficiency improvement, torque ripple reduction, improvement in power division between inverter phases, more degree of freedom and independent control of several multi-phase motors with single inverter supply.
Because of this attraction features in multi-phase motors compared to conventional three-phase motors, studying of multi-phase motors is very important. The aim of this thesis is familiarity with multi-phase motors, investigation of advantage and disadvantage of them; especially independent control of several multi-phase motor with single inverter supply.
Many applications needs more than one motor with adjustable speed control such as textile factories, air conditioning systems, robotic arms, winders and electric vehicles. The conventional method for a multi-motor system is usage of one common DC link and dedicades one voltage source inverter to any machines. In this thesis, usage of multi-phase motors has been proposed as an alternative in applications that needs more than one controlled motor. Also in this study, the rules of symmetrical multi-phase induction motors connections has been mentioned in parallel and series forms and for odd and even number of phases.
The other purpose of this thesis is to determine the mathematical model for simulation of symmetrical multi-phase induction motors in single, parallel and series connections.
