Abstract
Nowadays, due to population growth and land scarcity for construction
activities, engineeriners have to use the site which are not suitable for erection
and if construction take place without soil improvement, it will result in financial
and human losses. Saline soils are type of soil that do not have proper
geotechnical properties. Commonly, cement is used for saline soil
improvement. Because of environmental problem in cement production and
usage, need for approach which is provided engineering properties and
besides that, be environmentally- friendly is feeling. Biopolymers are one of
the new methods that have utilized for soil improvement. In this experiment,
casein biopolymer has been applied for saline soil treatment. Casein, which is
driven by milk, impact on physical and mechanical properties of sand at four
dosage has been investigated. Moreover, because of ever-growing problems
arising from salt dust, feasibilty of using casein for dust mitigation has been
studied. Results of UCS tests showed that even though salt increment in soil
brings about decrease in compressive strength of samples, however, by
adding casein in soil, compressive strength of samples increased significantly
than that of untreated saline soil. There was a substantial reduction in soil
permeability after treatment. Results of wind tunnel test demonstrated that
casein could be used to prevent salt storm. At the end, for observing interparticle interaction SEM test was utilized and results indicated that casein
acted as binder to form bond between soil’s particles.
