This study investigates on the sound transmission loss in the embedded silencers of common vehicle. There are transfer matrix methods, three-point method, four pole method, finite element method and boundary element method for calculating the level of sound transmission loss. In this thesis, due to their high accuracy and speed in solving, boundary element method is used. The Transmission Loss is calculated by the Boundary Element Method and compared with other computational methods. In this study, mufflers including simple geometry with expansion chamber, perforated tubes, baffle, microporous panel, absorbent silencers with curved tubes were modeled using the CATIA software. The Transmission Loss of these models is calculated by COMSOL multiphysics software. After validating the results, the geometrical parameters of a more complex muffler structure, that includes the influence geometrical factors on the level of sound transmission loss, has been optimized by the Taguchi algorithm.
