Biological drugs or biopharmaceuticals are made biological sources such as microorganisms. Vaccines, blood products, somatic cells, allergens and recombinant proteins are the most widely recognized types of biopharmaceutical products. Biotechnology has produced more than 400 drugs for about 200 types of diseases, such as cancers and Alzheimer's, heart disease, diabetes, MS and AIDS. Human interferons are glycoproteins and are believed to be involved in the control of various viral infections. Very low production of interferon has always been a limitation. PEGylation is usually an extra step at the end of the process of producing a protein. Purpose of PEGylation is to increase the size of the protein and prevent it from exiting the body through the kidneys. This process reduces the number of injection and ultimately the patient's satisfaction. In this thesis, PEG activation for PEGylation of interferon beta 1a and purification of interferon beta 1a from albumin and finally binding of activated PEG to interferon beta 1a have been investigated experimentally in Biosun Pharmed laboratory. During this experiment, interferon beta 1a separated from albumin, PEG aldehyde produced from m-PEG in three steps and finally these two products were then reacted with moderate heating for 20 hours. At the end unreacted interferons and PEG were separated by ultrafiltration and PEGylated interferon beta 1a was also collected. The efficiency of the process was determined by the Bradford protein assay about 74%.
