Abstract
It is possible to increase the traveling speed of trains by using the Continuously Welded Rails (CWR). Field investigations have shown that the track’s lateral resistance is not enough to use the CWR is some locations such as curves. In fact, using CWR causes some large longitudinal forces which results in the large lateral deflections in railway tracks. So far, several methods have been used to measure track’s lateral resistance. Recently, I have welded respectively 1, 2, 3 stiffeners under the steel sleepers in my seminar and I have measured the tracks lateral resistance using STPT method in the laboratory. And then the results have been compared to the lateral resistance of steel sleeper without stiffener. Obtained results show that using 2 stiffeners under steel sleeper causes 140 percent increase in lateral resistance of the steel sleeper. Thus, using 2 stiffeners under steel sleeper to increase track’s lateral resistance was considered in my thesis. In this thesis, lateral resistance of a 50 m track panel was measured in to sequences. In the first sequence, the sleepers were normal steel sleepers without stiffeners, and in the second sequence, the sleepers were steel sleepers with to stiffeners which were welded under the rail seats. Then, the obtained results of these two sequences were compared together.
The obtained results of field investigations show that using two stiffeners under steel sleepers causes 135.6 percent increase in panel’s lateral resistance which is meaningful in compare with laboratory tests. Also, obtained results of STPT method shows that using two stiffeners under the steel sleeper causes 140 percent increase in sleeper’s lateral resistance which is equal to the laboratory obtained results.
