Red-light running is one of the prevalent sights at signalized intersections that vehicles pass without caring for the light. A red- light runner not only ventures his life, but also the safety of other road users. Elaborating features of at-fault drivers that issue crashes could result in recognizing important factors and lead decision-makers to find out actions they could prevent them. This study aims to identify the driver and vehicle characteristics affecting red-light running crash occurrence at signalized intersections of Iran. The methodology of the study was based on quasi-induced exposure concept, logistic regression and decision tree (CART) method for 10 independent variables and one binary target variable of "driver status". The statistical population included 12445 red-light running crashes from 2012 to 2016. The results demonstrated that vehicle type, residence, license type, and education level affect drivers' fault status in these crashes in which, based on logistic regression, truck and emergency vehicles, foreign drivers and type 2 driving license increase the risk of drivers' being at-fault. On the other hand, CART method showed that vehicles such as bus, truck, mini truck, pickup, trailer, emergencies, drivers with type 3, specific and temporary are more likely to be at-fault and foreign drivers with automobile and minibus and drivers with type1,2 and specific license are more likely to be not-at-fault. Finally, some countermeasures such as increasing male drivers' knowledge, separating theoretical certificating classes according to the education level of the drivers with more emphasis on violations in lower education levels, determining one year credit for temporary licenses and renew them if only they do not commit violation during one year, establishing specific facilities for emergency vehicles in emergency times that they can not stop at red lights, emphasizing on frequent technical inspection of vehicles with more than 10 years for examining their braking system and installing red-light cameras at signalized intersections to prevent red-light running violations.
