Impassable mountainous regions are one of the significant destinations for tourists, which due to arduous accessibility, are neglected to visit. The best way to reach these regions would be the railways, owing to its conservative nature which protects the environment and noteworthy settlements and also reduces the pollution and non-native population. By having this to account, the main goal of this research would be explaining the role of ecological tourism planning in impassable mountainous regions by railways. Tehran-Mazandaran railway is chosen as the case of this study in light of its antiquity, settlement growth in heart of the mountain, and presence of railway tourism. In order to recognize and exploring the existent stations and adjacent habitations, the documentary, and library accompanied by field studies are selected. Indigenous people, railway tourists, and the experts were the three statistical society, which their ideas have been used by the comparative analysis. In the following, with the advantage of the Gunn tourism model, analysis of the considered area is done. As a result, the route planning has been done by explaining the possibilities and limitations and also codification of the strategic planning document. Consequently, in this development, railway stations have the role of tourism development nodes in the region. Stations of which have the most development capacity, are considered as the ecological tourism development nodes. Mentioned nodes would be the main development axis by forming a tourism complex including natural, historical, and rural attractions, furthermore they would develop the surrounding area. With this end, in addition to the economic development of settlements and tourism, protection and conservation of the environment will carry out with the best way. Therefore, ecological tourism in mountainous regions based on the railway would be fulfilled.
