Upconversion materials are attracting considerable attention for their possible applications in solar cells with improved efficiency, nanomaterials for bio-imaging, lasers and novel display technologies. Upconversion materials, usually consisting of crystals doped with lanthanide ions, can convert low-energy incident radiation into higher energy emitted radiation
In this project we tried to fabricate 45SiO2-45PbF2-10Al2O3-xEr (x= 1, 0.1) glass-ceramic using sol-gel route. PbF2 crystal is one of the best hosts for Er3+ ions for upconversion. Heat treatment was done in different temperatures and for phase investigation, XRD was carried out.
Because of using nitrate precursor, Lead (II) nitrate was observed in the system which decomposed to Lead (II) oxide by heat treatment. Because of the limitation for choosing the substrate, it wasn't possible to increase the temperetature as the Lead (II) oxide gets out of the system completely and due to lack of liquid-liquid phase separation, PbF2 wasn't crystalized. STA was carried out to investigate the crystallization and volatiles exit. Moreover, we didn't observe emission spectra due to not forming the PbF2 crystals.
