Phototherapy is a process in which the patient is exposed to a light source and treated by light radiation. The light is illuminated to the skin to be used for treating skin diseases such as acne vulgarize, eczema, psoriasis and so on. Here we study the treatment of a skin disease that is called psoriasis. Psoriasis is an inflammatory autoimmune disease and is the result of immune system's attack against itself. In Psoriasis, white blood cells, known as T cells, attack the skin cells by mistake. White blood cells are primarily responsible for protecting the body against bacteria and infections. This mistaken attack to the Skin cells increases the rate of production of skin cells and causes new skin cells to produce and is pushed to the top of skin and lifted, resulting in plaques which are called psoriasis. It affects approximately 2 to 3% of people worldwide. Over the past few decades, phototherapy has been widely used to treat persistent psoriasis lesions, including body, head's skin, hand and foot and partial nail psoriasis. Different types of light / laser with different solutions have been developed for psoriasis, including: Ultraviolet light B (UVB), ultraviolet light A (UVA) with Psoralen (PUVA), Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL), Photodynamic (PDT), Intense Pulse Laser (IPL), Light emitting diodes (LEDs), lasers/Excimer lamps, etc. Because light / laser each have therapeutic and detrimental effects, it is important to have the right resources and parameters to be able to choose appropriately between psoriasis treatment with different locations, pathogenic intensities and the duration of the disease. Narrow band of ultraviolet light B is the first line of treatment for psoriasis's stable plaque and pulsed Dye laser (PDL) for small, localized psoriasis lesions that are both safe and are effective. On the other hand, if its side effects can be better controlled, PUVA has therapeutic effects and it is better than UVB for treating resistant psoriasis plaques. Recent research shows that NB-UVB and Excimer laser are effective treatment options for psoriasis.
