Spending a considerable amount of time in their homes, people are highly affected, both mentally and physically, by their housing and neighborhood conditions. Nowadays, the rapid growth in the population of urban areas has become a challenging issue, negatively affecting residents’ mental and physical health. Therefore, providing citizens with healthy housing has become a concern to be addressed in many countries, developing countries in particular. The aim of this study is to identify the factors affecting health-related quality of life in housing as well as evaluating physical, mental, environmental and social health of women, residing at Ekbatan residential complex, with regard to healthy housing indices.
The indices of healthy housing were identified through an extensive literature review of more than eighty academic resources and were validated by experts using a Delphi method. The results were used to create questionnaires of healthy housing which along with a standard WHOQOL questionnaire were presented to 120 women who lived in phase 2 and 3 of Ekbatan Residential Complex in Tehran, Iran. Health of the residents who participated in the survey were assessed using WHOQOL guidelines. Finally, the correlations between measures of healthy housing, and mental and physical health of participants were calculated.
We found that water quality, heating conditions, safety standards, and air conditioning to be significantly correlated (P <0.005) with the average physical health of the residents. Noise pollution, view and landscape, lighting, and neighbor’s responsibility were associated with mental health. Moreover, Location, Accessibility to health centers, Recycling situation and public facilities were found effective on Environmental health. Also, the public walking spaces and social interactions were contributed to social health. Implementing the results of this study of healthy housing can increase quality of life, improve mental, physical, environmental and social health, and decrease the risk of related illnesses.
