آنچه كه امروزه در بسياري از شهرهاي معاصر شاهد هستيم، القاي حس بي هويتي و سردرگمي است. از اينرو حفظ هويت شهرها و مناطق شهري از مباحثي است كه امروزه مورد توجه حرفه مندان شهري قرار دارد. متمايز بودن شهرها با تكيه بر خصويات كالبدي و همجنين حفظ محيط و عناصر طبيعي كه نقش عمده اي در هويت بخشي به شهرها دارند، در كنار مؤلفه هاي اجتماعي و فرهنگي از عناصر مهمي است كه بايد مورد توجه قرار گيرد. با تغيير در توسعه شهرها و تغيير الگوهاي فضاي شهري، جايگاه و نقش بافت هاي تاريخي بجا مانده در شهرها كه موجب هويت بخشيدن به فضا مي شوند به سرعت رو به كم رنگ شدن و از بين رفتن است. شهرهاي معاصر در حال از دست دادن شخصيت و هويت خود هستند و بافت ها و بناهاي تاريخي شهرها از توانائي هاي خود به منظور ارتقاي هويت شهري باز مانده اند. بنابراين هدف اصلي پژوهش حاضر مرمت مولفه ها و عناصر تاريخي بافت تاريخي در شكل دهي به هويت تربت جام خواهد بود. اين عناصر قديمي،هويت ساز تربت جام عهد قديم محسوب مي شده كه طي تحولات دوران معاصر از نقش و اهميت آنها كاسته شده است. در راستاي اين تحولات بنيادين در شهرهاي تاريخي و رفع مشكلات از بافت تاريخي شهرها طرح هايي در قالب بازسازي – نوسازي – بهسازي و باز زندهسازي در زمينه هاي مختلف تهيه و اجرا شده است. شيوه برخورد با اين بافتهاي تاريخي متأثر از ديدگاههاي فلسفي در شهرسازي متفاوت بوده است. شهر تاريخي تربتجام با قدمت ديرينه از اين قاعده تحولات بنيادين شهرسازي در ايران مستثني نبوده و تحولات بسياري در ساختار سنتي آن صورت گرفته است . نظام بههم پيوسته و ارگانيك شهر به همراه شبكه معابر و محلههاي خودكفاي تاريخي دچار تحولات بسيار شدهاند از جمله محله گذرهاي تاريخي شهر تربتجام كه جزء هستههاي تاريخي استان خراسان رضوي به شمار ميرود. در اين محله به رغم طرح هاي اجرا شده از جمله كف سازي معابر، بهسازي و بازسازي تك بناهاي باارزش و ايجاد فضاي سبز تاكنون نتوانسته هويت تاريخي خود را همانند گذشته حفظ كرده، به دليل نبود يك برنامه بلندمدت مدون در مسير حفظ و احياء هستههاي تاريخي شهر و هماهنگ با بقيه اجزاء خود در مسير توسعه گام بردارد، ضمن اينكه همواره شاهد گريز جمعيت از محله و فرسودگي بيش از حد ابنيه و زوال اين گذرهاي تاريخي در شهر تربتجام هستيم. حفظ ارزشهاي ماندگار و تاريخي در محله، روان سازي ترافيك و ايجاد وحدت فضايي در مجموعه گذرها، اشتغال زايي و بازگرداندن هويت اجتماعي و احياء معابر و گذرهاي تاريخي جهت جذب گردشگر از جمله مهم ترين نتايج اين تحقيق به شمار مي- رود كه از روش ميداني و تحليلي در هسته تاريخي شهر انجام پذيرفته و داراي قابليت بالقوه جذب جمعيت گردشگر است. در اين پژوهش پس از شناخت و بررسي بر روي يك واحد همسايگي در محله به واكاوي يكايك گذرها و معابر و اجزاء تشكيل دهنده آن پرداخته شده تا با امكان باززندهسازي مطلوب براساس ساختار اجتماعي، فرهنگي، اقتصادي و جلب مشاركت مردمي بتوان هويت تاريخي بافت قديم شهر را مجددا محقق كرد و در راستاي يك محله سرزنده، با حفظ هويت تاريخي خود به يك نوسازي پايدار دست يافت
