Nowadays, Modular Multilevel Converters with unique features such as modular structure to produce desired voltage levels, very high efficiency, very good harmonic performance, small output filter dimensions and waveform high-quality output, have been widely accepted in both the industry and research. Since electronic power converters act as an energy interface between the input and output sections, the stable performance of this converter depends on its correct control. Due to the increasing use of this structure in the railway industry and the important role of this converter in the future of the railway, the study of structure, modulation as well as control methods are of particular importance. In this report, we first review the converter structure, modulation as well as control methods. Then, the future applications of this converter in the railway industry have been discussed. Proper operation of the control method requires the correct choice of modulation and control method. In the structure of this report, while choosing the right control and modulation method, and considering their advantages and disadvantages, the effects of the control system on the performance of the converter are discussed. Finally, using the Simulink/MATLAB software, the effect of improper operation of various control parts on power losses and harmonic distortion of output voltage, etc. have been investigated.
