شبكه برق پس از معرفي مفاهيم مختلف همچون مفاهيم بازار با سرعتي بالا به سوي هوشمندي پيش مي‌رود. در اين مسير در هر مرحله يك نوع مشترك از شبكه گذشته و نحوه توليد و مصرف آن جدا شده و با استفاده تجهيزات ارتباطي و مديريت منابع مختلف خود وارد مرحله‌اي تازه از تبادلات برق مي‌شود و استقلال عملكردي خود از شبكه را بدست مي‌آورد. در اين مسير ابتدا توليدات عمده استقلال يافتند. در چند سال اخير توجهات به مصرف‌كنندگان جلب شده است و با استفاده از تجهيزات مختلف در اختيار مصرف‌كننده اين توانايي به او اهدا شده است تا در برنامه‌هاي مختلف پاسخگويي بار شركت كند تا بتواند سود بيشتري و يا هزينه كمتري از برق مبادله شده خود كسب نمايد. اكنون زمان آن رسيده است كه مصرف‌كنندگان بتوانند در بازار مختص خود شركت كنند و حق استفاده از توان خريداري شده خود در مراحل قبل بازار را به ديگر مشتركين موجود در بازار بفروشد. در بازار طراحي شده در ابتدا مدير شبكه با در نظر گرفتن شرايط شبكه ارزش كاهش توان هر مصرف‌كننده را مشخص مي‌نمايد و سپس در محيطي برنامه‌ريزي شده با تبادل اطلاعات مختص هر گروه، اين امكان را به خريداران و فروشندگان حاضر در بازار مي‌دهد كه با مبادله توان به ميزان دلخواه با قيمت مشخص شده در هر بازه زماني، به تبادل بپردازند. بازار طراحي شده مكانيزمي براي كنترل ميزان تبادل در نواحي مختلف را نيز در نظر گرفته است كه به مديريت شبكه اجازه مديريت بهتر شرايط شبكه در بازار را مي‌دهد. نتايج بدست آمده نشان مي‌دهد كه بازار طراحي شده در بيشينه‌سازي سود مشتركين به خوبي عمل خواهد كرد.
