Managing the claims of construction projects with the approach of eva‎luating the interaction of claims

Preventing claims and resolving disputes has been one of the constant concerns of construction industry activists. The necessity of predicting essential arrangements has become the basis for the formation of valuable research in claims management. Some researchers emphasize that construction projects are prone to the formation of disputing claims are inevitable. Therefore, the construction industry is one of the developing ways to identify and eva‎luate possible project claims. However, most studies have identified and eva‎luated semi-quantitative and individual claims, specifically. The eva‎luation of interactive effects of the critical factors of the claims' occurrence on the formation of each other and how much probable to happen, this research intends to provide a suitable solution for carrying out an eva‎luation of the interactions and examining the scenarios of the factors occurring. For this purpose, in addition to identifying the causes of claims in the construction industry projects, the DEMATEL method is used to identify and model the interactions of the factors calculated by the Bayesian network to assess these factors' occurrence. The eva‎luation of the potential claims interactions can increase project success because it opens up an opportunity for the project agents to understand better the effectiveness, interaction, and conditions of the claim agents on each other to make the necessary decisions to prevent or resolve the claims. The results of the research show the significant influence of the critical factors of the occurrence of claims in the construction industry projects in aggravating the conditions of occurrence of each other. Among all those factors identified in this research, there are some factors identified as the most probable causes of claims in construction projects, namely difficult economic conditions ruling the country, management inability of the contractor, and instability and change of responsible persons in the employer or consultant with 75%,58%,57% probability of the occurrence, respectively. The effect of the factors showed that the problems and economic conditions governing the country and the instability of the presence of responsible people in the employer and consultant can seriously trigger other factors happening. On the other hand, preventing them reduces the probability of the occurrence of other influencing factors in their network. The proposed approach helps the managers working in the construction industry to eva‎luate the scenarios of the occurrence of claims to adopt the necessary measures for the management of claims and assess their effectiveness.
