Abstract
in recent decades, extensive changes and developments have occurred in cities and urban elements of the country which can be attributed to the increase of population, commercialism, the influence of modernism on iranian cities. meanwhile, land use change and construction of residential and commercial towers have changed the faces of cities more than other factors. in contemporary urban planning, new concepts have entered our urban literature, concepts such as malls, megamalls, shopping centers and passages. The expansion of the construction of large-scale shopping centers or so-called malls has diminished the role of traditional markets in cities, markets that once had a global reputation but now have lost the ability to compete with this center.
among these, the covered bazaar of Tabriz is one of the most important traditional bazaar in Iran which is also the largest market in the world. in the past, this market has a key role in the economy of Tabriz as well as its surrounding areas, and the merchants of other countries went to the market to sell their products, which is proved by the existence of large caravanserais. however, in recent decades, this market is not safe from the invasion of new shopping centers. in this research we have tried to explain the effects of large-scale shopping centers on Tabriz bazaa. to achieve this goal, among the mass of new shopping centers, four of them including Laleh park, the atlas shopping center, the mashrouteh passage, and the setareh baran shopping center were selected.
The current research was compiled using a descriptive-analytical method, and questionnaires, interviews and field observations were used to collect information, and t-test was used to analyze the results of the questionnaire. After analyzing the data obtained from the information sources, the research hypotheses have been proven, thus it was found that there is a direct relationship between the expansion of shopping centers and the functional weakening of the Tabriz bazzar, which has been intensified by the ill-considered actions of the city management, which can be He also observed a large number of empty shops in this market. Finally, practical solutions to strengthen the functionality of the Tabriz baazar have been presented.
