Glass and glass ceramic coatings are used in various industries due to advantages such as chemical resistance, stability at high temperatures, and excellent mechanical properties such as wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and impact resistance, etc. compared to other coatings.
In the present research, by using several different alkaline borosilicate glass compositions, the factors affecting the coating of the glass layer on copper metal were investigated. After melting and casting in cold water, the prepared mixtures were ground and passed through a sieve in order to achieve the appropriate rheology, and the granularity of the slurry was checked by PSA test. The prepared compounds were applied by spray on the substrate and after drying at 100°C, with different compounds and thermal regimes, they were baked at different temperatures in order to determine the best temperature, the best combination and the best thermal regime. After checking the appearance of the coatings visually, the characterization of dried grout powder and cured coatings was done by XRD test, and the best samples were SC 620, SC 750 and SC 775. The surface and cut surface of the coatings were examined by FESEM to check the microstructure and determine the thickness of the coating, and the average thickness of the coatings was reported to be 100 microns. The surface hardness of the coatings on the Vickers scale was reported as 534, 607 and 712 for SC 620, SC 750 and SC 775 samples, respectively. The surface of the coatings was examined by the pin-on-disk test at a distance of 150 meters, and the SC 775 sample with a friction coefficient of 0.7 was the best sample. The chemical resistance of the coatings was measured by the ISO 28706-1:2008 standard, and all three samples were classified in the AA class. Also, the VDI3198 standard was used to evaluate the adhesion of the coatings, and the SC 620 and SC 775 samples were classified in the HF1 class and the SC 750 sample was classified in the HF5 class.
