The rise of English as an International Language (EIL) has sparked much controversy in the past few decades all over the globe. The ascendancy of the English language into power has been primarily attributed to the politico-economic privileges that English-speaking countries have enjoyed throughout history. Neoliberalism ideology, with an emphasis on principles of the market, has profoundly intertwined with English language Teaching (ELT) an‎d reshaped the entire field in the everchanging image of the market. To establish an understan‎ding of what is instilled along the process of language acquisition is the need of the hour. Going through 5 methodical stages, this thesis has aimed to illuminate how neoliberalism ideology has manifested an‎d been put into practice within the field of ELT. On January (19th- 23rd) 2024, a collection of 97 articles was singled out based on a pre-determined set of inclusion an‎d exclusion criteria across three prominent educational databases namely, ERIC, Scopus, an‎d Web of Science. The study systematically mapped the intersection of neoliberalism an‎d ELT, addressing methodological an‎d conceptual issues across the selec‎ted studies. The thesis concludes by exploring the implications that come into light for the field of ELT an‎d the alternatives that are proposed in the face of neoliberalism ideology.
