Investigating the Perceptions, Practices, Benefits, an‎d Drawbacks of AI Technologies like ChatGPT in EFL Learners’ Language Learning

The study investigated EFL learners’ perceptions of ChatGPT, their patterns of use in English language learning, their views on the benefits of this AI-based tool, an‎d the challenges they experienced while using it. The study also explored learners’ opinions regarding the role of ChatGPT as a supportive learning resource rather than a replacement for teachers. Data were collected using a mixed-methods research design through a structured questionnaire consisting of Likert-scale items an‎d four open-ended questions. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative responses were thematically analyzed to enrich the findings. The results show that learners had a positive attitude towards ChatGPT in most cases. They stated moderate to high usage, especially in the acquisition of vocabulary, grammatical support, composition support an‎d ideation. The respondents also observed that ChatGPT improved their motivation, learner autonomy, confidence, an‎d English language learning engagement. The perceived benefits without eva‎luation showed that most respondents rated immediate feedback, ease of access an‎d customized support as the most important. On the other side, barriers that were noted were the unanswered items, the complexity of the output obtained, over-reliance an‎d reduced critical thinking. Still, in spite of these difficulties, the majority of learners were sure in their ability to develop effective pro‎mp‎ts, an‎d they were aware of the necessity to use ChatGPT critically. The paper highlights the importance of pedagogical guidance, teaching digital literacy, an‎d educational policies to ensure that ChatGPT implementation in the EFL setting is not only productive an‎d efficient but also ethical.
