Acknowledging underlying criticisms directed at the weakness of rationalist problem-solving strategies, particularly in their application to the essentially messy and often ill-defined nature of architectural design problems, a paradigm shift toward constructivist stances has gained considerable ground in the field. This epistemological turn focuses on the cognitive processes of design and the designerʹs active construction of understanding and solutions. Under this paradigm, framing and frame-making have come to be regarded as pivotal activities that channel the course and outcome of the design process. While the theoretical underpinnings of framing have been discussed in various domains of design studies, its operationalization and the establishment of concrete analytical tools for its research remain conceptually abstract and without definite expression within the specific context of architectural design.
Concurrently, an expanding and powerful research domain examines architectural design processes using narrative and storytelling frameworks. These investigations draw from literary theory, sociology of knowledge, and communication studies to assert that narratives serve as essential cognitive tools which designers use to navigate ideation processes and concept development while exploring potential design solutions. Narratives function as epistemic mechanisms that organize the presentation of design interventions while providing justification for design choices and communicating architectural proposal rationales to various stakeholders. Framing emerges as an intricate and mutable contextual realm where diverse values, including those that appear contradictory or incommensurable, coexist within design discourse without necessitating mutual exclusivity or premature foreclosure of possibilities. The idea presented here indicates that framing emerges through the co-construction of verbal stories among designers, clients, users, and others which define their collective perception of the design challenge and its possible solutions. This research undertakes a thorough exploration of the narrative potential to clarify frames as representational constructs that embody designersʹ situated knowledge including their problem space comprehension and contextual limitations along with aspirational objectives. Architectural design research and practice demand a unified framework to address existing ambiguities in framing methods.
Employing a fundamental-theoretical research paradigm, characterized by its focus on developing and refining theoretical constructs, and a qualitative methodological strategy, which prioritizes an in-depth understanding of complex phenomena within their natural context, this study draws upon a rigorous process of library-based inquiry and the principles of logical reasoning. Through a comprehensive and critical review of extant design research literature, spanning diverse perspectives on design cognition, methodology, and theory, it critically examines the concept of framing specifically from a constructivist epistemological standpoint. Subsequently, building upon this critical analysis, the research seeks to articulate a structured and theoretically informed approach for leveraging the often-underexplored capacity of narrative as a powerful cognitive and communicative tool within this conceptual framework of framing.
The study, drawing on literature synthesis and logical inference, reveals the high potential to render the abstract concept of design framing, ultimately driven by the need to structure the designerʹs emergent knowledge of the complex design situation, a more tangible and actionable narrative-based strategy in four sweeping and interrelated activities. The first is a significant process of naming. This is followed by the first explanation of the often vague and intricate design situation through the active building of early stories. Early stories are preliminary hypotheses, mirroring the designerʹs initial perceptions, assumptions, and early shaping of the central issues and opportunities embedded in the design brief. Then the construction of a coherent and higher-level frame is conceived not as a static barrier but as an adaptive and evolving higher-level narrative. This higher-level narrative builds iteratively from the additive assembly, superposition, and negotiation of the initial stories, progressively aggregating into a more integrative and enlarged conception of the design issue and its broader context. The next stage is a critical move towards the production of concrete design solutions. This is articulated as the production of solution-oriented stories, where prospective design interventions are conceived and considered in terms of the evolving overall narrative structures. Solution-oriented stories allow designers to try out and evaluate different design alternatives, considering their probable impact on the narrative of the designed world. Finally, a reflective narrative process that is iterative and ongoing permeates the entire design process. This is in the guise of constant critical reflection on the emerging narratives, enabling refinement, elimination of less relevant details, and incorporation of new ideas and insights as the design evolves. This iterative cycle of story-making, narrative construction, and thinking continues until the overarching narrative, as the strongest and last frame, satisfactorily explains the inherent complexities, constraints, and ambiguities of the specific architectural design problem. The generated narrative frame not only serves as a directional guide for the design but also as an effective carrier to convey the design concept and the values that it embodies to a larger audience.
This research seeks to introduce a novel framework for understanding framings within the architectural design process, targeting educators, students, and practitioners. The aim is to foster deeper reflection on design thinking and design process. Future inquiry in this area could involve a series of empirical investigations grounded in the proposed structure. These studies could be conducted within pedagogical settings, such as design workshops involving instructors and students, as well as in professional architectural offices among design team members. Methodological approaches may include observation, semi-structured interviews, the recording and subsequent content analysis of verbal and textual narratives, developing and applying of coding schemes, and critical discussions regarding the diverse methodologies and techniques employed.
